According to a recent statewide poll commissioned by the Coalition for Auto Insurance Reform (CAIR), an overwhelming number of Michigan voters believe their auto insurance premiums are too high and support no-fault reform legislation that would lower their auto insurance costs. Michigan to Issue Driver’s Licenses to Illegal Immigrants

Illegal immigrants brought to the country as children can start applying for Michigan driver’s licenses and state IDs. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson’s office began accepting applications on Feb. 19. President Barack Obama last year announced a policy letting illegal immigrants apply for temporary work permits if they were brought to the U.S. as children. But a small number of states including Michigan resisted allowing those immigrants to have driver’s licenses. Increases for Liability Insurance for Construction Firms

The commercial general liability market for the U.S. construction industry continues to firm with underwriters seeking rate increases of up to 15 percent, according to a report published by Marsh. Michigan Drivers to Pay Less Fees

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that will eliminate some extra fees that are imposed on drivers for certain traffic offenses, effective October 2012. Senate Bill 166 repeals pieces of the state’s “driver responsibility” program that adds extra fees to some offenses that offenders already must pay fines for committing. The State of Michigan estimates a loss of ~ $20 million / year in fees, once the law becomes effective.

Workers’ Compensation Changes in Michigan

Workers’ compensation reform legislation that suppose to reduce employer costs for helping injured workers has advanced in Michigan. The state Senate has passed a bill that was previously approved in the House, with some changes.
