Text Alert System Warns Users about Disasters

Wireless carriers and the federal government are launching a system to automatically warn people of dangerous weather and other emergencies via a special type of text messaging to cell phones, USA Today reports. This is the first national service by the federal government and the wireless industry. The Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) service, which begins this month, is free, and consumers won’t have to sign up. Zurich Insurance launches apps for risk managers

Zurich Insurance Co. Ltd. has launched two apps for risk managers, the insurer announced Wednesday at Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.’s Annual Conference and Exhibition in Philadelphia. The Zurich Risk Room app is a limited version of the larger risk modeling software Zurich offers clients. The app shows scenarios for natural catastrophe and disaster management, supply chain disruption, regulatory imbalances, social value of insurance and economic value of insurance. Arizona motorists will be able to use their smart phones to prove to a police officer that they have insurance for their vehicles. Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law a bill to have Arizona join Idaho in permitting motorists to use a wireless communication device to show proof of auto insurance. Texting While Driving Now Banned in Idaho

At least 35 states and Washington, D.C., ban text messaging by drivers, but efforts to toughen the law in Idaho has struggled to gain traction in recent years.  After several tries and frustrating setbacks, Idaho is set to join the majority of states that have toughened laws against sending text messages while driving. House lawmakers voted 53-17 Tuesday to bar motorists from using smartphones and other hand-held devices to review, prepare or send written communications. Rep. Julie Ellsworth, R-Boise, pushed the plan, saying a strong message from state leaders is needed to curb the deadly and growing habit.

SAN FRANCISCO-based independent insurance brokerage Paperless Insurance Services (PIS INC), Inc. has started offering business insurance products in the State of New York, PIS INC announced Thursday.
