Texting While Driving Now Banned in Idaho

At least 35 states and Washington, D.C., ban text messaging by drivers, but efforts to toughen the law in Idaho has struggled to gain traction in recent years.  After several tries and frustrating setbacks, Idaho is set to join the majority of states that have toughened laws against sending text messages while driving. House lawmakers voted 53-17 Tuesday to bar motorists from using smartphones and other hand-held devices to review, prepare or send written communications. Rep. Julie Ellsworth, R-Boise, pushed the plan, saying a strong message from state leaders is needed to curb the deadly and growing habit.

Contractor Fraud Bills Passed in IN, NE, and SD

The Indiana and Nebraska legislatures recently passed much needed legislation that could help protect homeowners from contractor fraud and abuse, according to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI). Additionally, the South Dakota legislature sent a similar bill to its governor in late February. Contractor fraud legislation also has been introduced in five other states — Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky and Tennessee, PCI said. Alaska to Ban Cellphones Use While Driving

A divided House committee has advanced a bill that would prohibit teens from talking on the phone while driving. Anchorage Democratic Rep. Berta Gardner’s HB128 would allow police to give citations only after someone has been pulled over for another violation. Keller said his vote was mainly because he believes the bill would help future prohibitions of cellphone use while driving, which has been a point of contention among legislators this year. Lynn said he opposed the bill because he feels that teens need to be treated like adults.

Another Reason to Move to Hawaii

Hawaii is adding more money to an electric vehicle rebate program and extending the deadline for the rebates. State officials said Tuesday that because of an increase in demand for electrical vehicles, $350,000 is being added for rebates on new electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and chargers. The deadline for the rebates is being extended from March 31 to Nov. 1.

“Super Losses” of Healthcare Sector

The overall cost and frequency of so called $50 million plus “super losses” in the U.S. healthcare insurance sector are on the rise. According to a report from specialist healthcare insurer Hiscox, the large losses keep on getting larger with juries in the last two years alone awarding more than $1 billion in total damages for just seven medical liability cases. The rise in large claims is happening despite the clear benefits of the implementation of quality and patient safety measures, Hiscox said.
