With Teensurance™ powered by Safeco, you can help parents change the conversation they have with their teen drivers. Think about how thankful parents will be when you take some of the worry out of the day! You can give parents tangible tools for helping them improve their teen’s driving. Imagine talking about more than just price!
Here are some key answers to typical questions that will help you change the conversation.
Q: What is Teensurance?
A: Teensurance is a completely new kind of package that gives parents a way to determine how their teen is driving.
The program offers parents a comprehensive set of online tools to encourage young drivers to drive responsibly–the system can notify parents when a driver exceeds a pre-set speed limit, for example. And it includes roadside assistance to deliver help for teens when they need it.
Teensurance gives parents some tangible assurance about how their teen is driving, which can make it easier for them to hand over the keys.
Q: What is included?
A: With Teensurance, parents and teens can:
- Track a car’s location online, in real time
- Have a car door remotely unlocked, in seconds, by making a phone call and entering your primary phone number and PIN (power door locks required)
- Set speed alerts
- Set a driving curfew
- Set “safe driving zones” to create geographic boundaries for new drivers
- Access roadside assistance, 24/7, in case of car trouble
- Track the vehicle (and allow police to track and retrieve the vehicle) if it is stolen
- Take a survey and download a Safe Driving Contract to help identify areas where your teen might need some driving instruction and give advice on how to address these potential problems
- Use other resources on the Teensurance Web site to improve driver safety
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Safeco offers Teensurance program participants access to online services and roadside assistance for a limited-time introductory price of $14.99 a month. This price is guaranteed for 2 years for those who sign up for the introductory offer. The regular price for Teensurance is $29.99 a month.
Buying Teensurance is similar to selecting a basic cell-phone program. By signing a service agreement, Safeco customers receive a Teensurance Safety Beacon™ and access to online account services to help them establish a safe driving plan with their new teen driver. The package includes free one-time professional installation of the Safety Beacon in any vehicle.
Q: How does it work?
A: A new driver’s performance can be monitored in real time via the Safety Beacon installed under the car dashboard.
After setting up an account, parents decide what limitations they want to place on their young driver. For instance, a parent could have the system send a notification if the teen takes the car more than 30 miles away from home. Or, say, if the driver exceeds 70 mph for more than 30 seconds.
Notifications can be sent to parents via e-mail, cell phone or regular phone, or accessed in the online Teensurance account. These instant alerts allow parents and teens to discuss poor driving habits when they’re still fresh in everyone’s minds.
The system works in any model of vehicle, but the remote-door-unlock capability requires a vehicle with power door locks. Drivers who are locked out of a car that does not have electronic locks can utilize roadside assistance.
Q: Why is Teensurance so important?
A: Car crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. In fact, 16-year-olds have a higher accident rate than drivers of any other age. The Teensurance program encourages teens to drive responsibly, which gives parents some assurance that their child will be safe with the keys to the car.
And the included roadside assistance program – available 24/7 – gives both parents and teens additional peace of mind.
Q: Are teens receptive to the Teensurance program?
A: In early pilot tests, we found that teens liked the roadside assistance features, but had some initial concerns about the Teensurance Safety Beacon. After just a few weeks, though, many teens used the program to prove to their parents that they were driving responsibly and to win additional driving freedoms.
Helping parents trust their teenagers with their car can help create a deeper relationship between you and your customers. Insurance will look a lot less like a commodity, and you’ll look even more like a friend of the family!
