Insurance Industry Loosing Jobs

The U.S. insurance industry shed 6,000 jobs in September compared with August, according to a report by the Insurance Information Institute based on data by the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite upticks in insurance industry employment in June and August of this year, the III said seasonally unadjusted insurance industry employment dropped to 2.17 million in September, its lowest point in 20 years. Property/casualty insurers’ employment was down 3,200 from August and down 2.9% from September 2009. New Milestone of Cyber Crime

Complaints about Internet crimes have reached a milestone. On Nov. 9, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) logged its 2 millionth consumer complaint alleging online criminal activity. The IC3, a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, became operational in May 2000 and received its 1 millionth complaint seven years later, on June 11, 2007. It took half that time to receive the 2 millionth complaint., which may be due to the IC3’s increased visibility as well as the continued growth of cyber crime. Authorities say a central New York convenience store’s surveillance cameras caught a man purposely pouring soda on the floor and then faking a fall so he could file an insurance claim against the business. Lloyd’s announced that it will open a representative office in Russia next year. Early Retiree Health Reimbursement Requires New Form

Organizations that haven’t yet applied to participate in a government program that will provide partial reimbursement of claims incurred by enrollees in their early retiree health care plans will have to use a new application form starting next week, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday. Did You Say ‘No’ to Legal Marijuana?

Amid strong employer opposition, California voters have rejected Proposition 19, which would have eliminated criminal penalties for marijuana possession. The California Chamber of Commerce, for example, sponsored “No on 19” radio ads. In addition to concerns about the measure’s potential impact on worker safety, the chamber argued that the measure would have set up “a new class of protected workers and essentially require employers to provide extra protections for marijuana users above those provided to other employees.” 53.8% of California voters opposed the measure in Tuesday’s balloting. 45.3% voted for the measure.
