Amid strong employer opposition, California voters have rejected Proposition 19, which would have eliminated criminal penalties for marijuana possession. The California Chamber of Commerce, for example, sponsored “No on 19” radio ads. In addition to concerns about the measure’s potential impact on worker safety, the chamber argued that the measure would have set up “a new class of protected workers and essentially require employers to provide extra protections for marijuana users above those provided to other employees.” 53.8% of California voters opposed the measure in Tuesday’s balloting. 45.3% voted for the measure. Missouri Welcomes Safeco

Safeco Insurance, a member of Liberty Mutual Group, has opened its new office in Fenton, Mo. Liberty Mutual also plans to hire 100 additional employees in St. Louis County over the next two years. With a seven-year lease agreement, Safeco now occupies approximately 54,000 square feet at 1400 South Highway Drive, Suites 100 and 200 West. There are currently about 340 Safeco employees at the location, predominantly composed of the company’s claim services. The Fenton office is one of 16 Liberty Mutual facilities in Missouri. 25% rise the number of people in California hit by cars on Halloween versus the rest of October, according to Allstate Insurance Co. Workplace Injuries in 2009 Declined.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday that nonfatal workplace injuries declined to 3.3 million in 2009, down from 3.7 million in 2008. The rate of such injuries fell to 3.6 cases per 100 equivalent full-time workers, a decrease from 3.9 per 100 in 2008. In a statement announcing the decrease, the Labor Department did not cite a reason for the lower numbers. But Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Zurich Insurance Operations Reorganized

Zurich Financial Services Ltd. is replacing its four general insurance divisions with six “market-facing businesses” and has named the executives who will lead those operations, the Zurich-based insurer said last Thursday. Global Corporate, one of the original divisions, will carry on as one of the new operations, and Mario Vitale will continue in his role as CEO of that unit.
