Even if you’re importing sourced or someone’s else product, as soon as you attach your label on the product, you
become responsible for claims associated with the use of the product.
Some of the claims can be avoided if operating manual is well written and easy to follow. How much, do you think, IKEA incurred in losses, because people assembling its products couldn’t figure out how to build that piece of furniture.
Although, I have to admit, IKEA has made a great progress in writing its manuals. And their manuals are written without using any single word in any language. Simple. Easy to follow. International.
To write a great assembly and operating manual you don’t need to learn rocket science (unless you’re selling DIY rockets):
– Prepare a plan: Introduction, Main part, Troubleshooting, Contacts
– After the manual is finished – test it with some one, who is not familiar with your product. It is also helpful to test using help of people of different gender and age. Note each and every difficult their are coming acro
ss, using your manual and re-write it. Test it again.
– Be prepared to act immediately to address any safety issues or recall the product should you find any problems with your product or the manual. In addition to product liability insurance consider buying product recall insurance.
