Local officials will let you know when it’s safe to come back after evacuating. Roads may be blocked and some areas without power for days or weeks.

Watch out for downed power lines. Stay at least 20 feet away, even if you think the line is de-energized, and report them to the power company. Lines can become re-energized at any point.

Use generators safely. Never operate a generator inside your home or in other enclosed spaces, as they produce carbon monoxide. Keep them outside and well away from open doors and windows. Turn off while refueling.

Be extremely cautious with chainsaws. Wear protective gear like gloves, goggles, and boots. Make sure you know how to use it properly before tackling debris.

Avoid driving. Roads may have hidden dangers like debris or power lines. Traffic signals may be out. Only drive if absolutely necessary.

Watch for snakes, insects, and animals. Animals like snakes may have taken shelter in your home or debris during the storm. Wear heavy boots and gloves when removing debris.

Drink bottled water. Do not drink tap water until officials confirm it’s safe. Water lines may have been damaged and water contaminated.

Stay cool. Without power, heat illness is a real risk. Drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks, and choose loose, light clothing. Seek air conditioning if possible.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Use generators, grills, camp stoves, and similar items only outdoors. Install CO alarms. Leave immediately if alarms sound.

Clean up safely. Wear protective clothing like goggles, gloves, boots. Sort debris carefully and take breaks. Disinfect and dry out your home to prevent mold growth.

Being prepared and taking the proper safety precautions can help you stay safe and healthy after a hurricane hits. Listen to local officials, be cautious, and don’t take unnecessary risks. With time, you’ll get your home and life back in order.
