What insurance do labs really need? In this short article we provide answers to some of the most common insurance related questions.

Today dental lab owners and lab technicians can be sued. But it is never late to give your business insurance a check-up and determine the type of liability insurance you need to have and then to make sure you have it.

The good place to begin with is to check the NADL (National Association of Dental Laboratories) or your state dental laboratory association. If you are a member of NADL than you can talk to their membership service rep and review what kind of coverage you should look for and what questions you should ask, especially if you opt to go with an independent agent that might not be familiar with insurance needs specific to the lab industry. The most important thing is to proceed and make sure you have the coverage you need.

Tough times are over, but even with the bad economy, you don’t have to have a deep pockets to afford the cost of liability insurance. The policy premiums can be as low as $425 a year, which is well worth when a lawsuit comes up.

The most suggested insurance for dental lab is business liability (3-rd party injury and property damage coverage), business personal property (coverage for your tools, equipment, stock and similar property, including property in transit), workers compensation (coverage for employees’ injuries and deceases), commercial auto (if you offer pick-up and delivery services), and last but not least professional liability / errors & omissions insurance.

First, let’s go with what your state may require: to carry workers’ compensation based on the number of employees or size of payrolls. As licensed insurance professionals we can explain your responsibility to your employees in this regard.

If you have financed your building, equipment or may be paying rent for a space in a building insurance requirements are most likely listed in your contract. We recommend to review how your current insurance policy would respond to claims related to tenant’s betterments and improvements.

Whereas, many dental labs buy insurance only to satisfy the requirements and don’t think about other possibilities, let’s review some possible situations that could cause great financial loss or cause the lab to cease operations: theft, fire on your premises or accident at vendor’s, loss of key employees, lawsuit by an employee or customer. Another major exposure is Professional Liability. Many insurance carriers offer an endorsement, with the following coverage explained: The carrier will pay on behalf of the insured dental lab those sums that the lab becomes legally obligated to pay as damages because of “Bodily Injury” or “Property Damage” caused by an “occurrence “arising out of the rendering or failure to render professional services as a “dental laboratory”. Dental lab professional liability insurance is termed “errors and omissions” liability, when liability is confined to acts of negligence. Beware: most insurance policies exclude professional liability coverage. And finally, a new trend and all-increasing exposure of data breach.

Product liability insurance (also called Products/Completed Operations) will provide coverage for injuries and property damages resulting from manufacturing flaws, design defects, defective warnings or instructions.

Myths and believes.

Don’t think that if you have an insurance policy so it must be covered. Give your business insurance a check-up now! Talk to a licensed insurance professional to determine your current coverage needs and demands. Don’t overpay for insurance. Insurance markets respond to changes very quickly: something that was more expensive a few years ago, could have become much more affordable now.

In the end, the best risk management advise we can give to a dental lab is to review their operations and risks and work on implementing and adhering to a safe work environment and a safe product to the market place.

– Yield to Trick-or-Treaters: Be prepared for children to run into the street at anytime.
– Refrain From Passing Idle Vehicles: You never know when the driver in front of you has stopped to drop children off. Be patient and take extra caution when traveling near other vehicles.
– Park Your Mobile Phone: With children crowding the dark roads, it is especially important to avoid any distractions while behind the wheel.
– Communicate With Other Drivers: Use hazard lights when picking-up or dropping-off trick-or-treaters. And, always use turn signals.
– Consider Alternate Routes: Avoid driving near trick-or-treaters by taking routes that go around busy neighborhoods, not through them.

When children have outgrown a convertible safety seat, they should use a booster seat until they are 10 years old.
Even when young children are tall enough to use an adult seat belt, they should ride in the backseat until they are 13 years old.

– Toddlers
Keep toddlers in a rear-facing, convertible safety seat for as long as possible.
When the child outgrows the safety seat, toddlers should sit in a forward-facing safety seat complete with a full harness.

– Infants
Always drive with infants in a rear-facing safety seat.
Once a child exceeds the manufacturer’s height and weight limit of the seat, infants should continue to ride facing the rear in a convertible safety seat.

Avoid Cramming, Pack Right. Even though your son or daughter will try to fit every last piece of dorm room equipment into the car, make sure whoever is driving is able to see out of the rearview mirror despite a fully packed car. Nothing should be packed above seat level in order to avoid projectile movement of objects if the need to stop short arises. Pack right by making two trips or shipping what will not fit safely in the car.

Take a Break. Whether you or child is driving, make sure to plan to take stops and break up your drive if it is a long one.

Conduct a Car Check. Check headlights, oil, turn signals, and tires before letting your son or daughter embark on their journey to college. You never know when these vehicle essentials may break down!

Keep Your Eyes Peeled For Pedestrians. All college campuses experience an increase in the number of pedestrians walking around. Remind your son or daughter to yield to pedestrians and to never pass a car that is stopped at a cross walk.

Always Lock up! College students often forget that urban areas of college campuses are not as safe as their parents’ driveway. Remind your son or daughter to never leave valuables in the car and always lock the car.

It’s time to go back to school!
Meet with your fellow carpoolers. Get to know your fellow carpoolers to gauge how responsible of a driver they are. Use that time to establish some ground rules in terms of pick-up and drop-off times so everyone is on the same page.

Make sure all passengers are buckled-up. Before driving away, make sure all adults and children in the car have a fastened seatbelt. Never let kids share a seatbelt and never transport children in the cargo area of a pickup truck, station wagon, or van.

Keep your eyes peeled. Avoid situations where you’ll have to back up in areas where young children are walking or playing. Also, make sure children get into their house once you drop them off before driving away. Always pay attention to your surroundings in the car.

Don’t play parent in the car. When you are driving carpool, your most important responsibility is driving. When children begin acting out, don’t try and solve behavior problems while driving. If the problem is affecting your driving, pull the vehicle over at a safe place to deal with the issue.

Pay attention to school guidelines on carpool lines. All schools have different systems in place to manage their carpool lines. Be observant of your school’s system and abide by their speed limit and drop-off and pick-up locations and times.

According to the GMAC Insurance Company, 4 out of 10 young adult drivers, ages 18-24, would fail the driver’s test if they took it today. While the youngest group proved to be the least knowledgeable when it comes to safe driving, 32% of 25-34 year old drivers would also fail the driver’s test if they took it today. Almost 1 in 3 drivers ages 25-34 failed the National Drivers Test—a five percent increase in their failure rate since 2009 (27%). These age groups make up a big portion of the 36.9 million estimated people deemed unfit for the roads based on the results of the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test.
All the news about younger drivers wasn’t so bad. In fact, 4 out of 5 of the youngest drivers who took the National Drivers Test, those aged 16-17, proved they would pass the test if they took the driver’s test today. That’s good news for the rest of us on the roads and for parents who have teenagers in the family that are beginning to get behind the wheel.
One finding of the 7th Annual GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test was that older drivers knew more about safe-driving. Older drivers did achieve higher test scores than younger drivers. Older drivers, ages 45-59 (16%) and 60-65 (13%), received the lowest failure rates of all age groups. Older drivers are safer drivers, on average.

If knowing the rules of the road is any indication of safe driving habits, then men are the safer drivers. That’s according to the 7th Annual GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test. This year, men had a test score that was slightly higher than 80%. That is significantly higher than females, who averaged just above 74%. What is more telling is that 27.2% of the women who took the test, failed. Compare that to the 13.6% of men who failed the National Drivers Test and we get a real sense of who knows the rules of the road better when it comes to men vs. women.

Take the test yourself

Visit www.nationaldriverstest.com to take the test and see how you size up when it comes to knowing the rules of the road. If you’re on Facebook, don’t forget to check out the National Drivers Test Facebook App where you and can “challenge a friend” to take the test!
